Red Hot Poker Plant Growing Zones
In the place of the horrible Red Hot Poker plant I ordered something truly hot, a double echinacea called ‘Hot Papaya’. Coneflowers have a long bloom period, which I like, but I dislike the big brown center on the standard coneflower. The double varietes are like much more attractive to me and I grow one of the original pink cultivars already. Though red hot poker looks tropical, the plant is quite hardy. Plant container-grown red hot poker in early spring in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Spread a 2-inch-thick layer of mulch over the plant's root zone to preserve soil moisture and prevent weeds. Water new plants weekly for the first growing season in the garden. We are in zone 7 and my neighbor has had a clump in his garden for 20 years. It dies to the ground each winter of course. I have grown one plant from seed - it is Kniphofia Rooperi and is just about to flower any day now - and I plan to leave it outside during the winter, although to be safe I will dig the planter in which it is located into the ground. Torch lily does well in zones 5-9. In the colder zones, be sure to lay down 2-3 inches of mulch before winter to protect the crowns of the plant. Uses for Red Hot Pokers. Where you find this plant you are also likely to find hummingbirds. They love the bright colors of it and sweet nectar, and are attracted to the tubular shape of the flowers.
